la Vieille and Trévennec

The Vieille and Trévennec lighthouses are two historic monuments standing on the rocks off Brittany’s Pointe du Raz.

These lighthouses were built to guide ships through the Raz de Sein passage, renowned for its violent currents and frequent, sudden fogs. La Vieille, completed in 1887, is the older of the two. It was nicknamed “the hell of hells” by the guards who lived there in harsh conditions.
Trévennec, built in 1894, is the most isolated and mysterious. It has had its share of dramas and legends, such as the one about the janitor who went mad and threw his cat into the sea.
