Mills, wash houses, etc. a historic town inhabited by its remains
Pont-Aven is a place steeped in history and charm, where you can admire a variety of picturesque landscapes. Following the Chemin Xavier-Grall, you cross the river via small hidden bridges in the style of rusticage; the art of imitating natural wood in reinforced cement, very much in vogue at the end of the 19ᵉ century during which “back to nature” was the fashion wanted by Napoleon III.
You’ll pass ancient washhouses and discover the ruins of old mills. Flowers brighten up stone walls and bridges. In the current, a large pebble called “Gargantua’s hoof” bears witness to the presence of mythical characters in the region.
Not far from the center, above the Bois d’Amour, the Trémalo chapel nestles behind majestic trees. Gauguin immortalized the nave’s colorful crucifix in his painting Le Christ Jaune.
Further on, a magnificent 15ᵉ century tide mill stands alongside the Château du Hénant. On reaching the ocean, the pretty beach of Port-Manech is well worth a visit.
